A little ole tornado watch in Allegany County couldn’t keep 539 young anglers away from the Battie Mixon Fishing Rodeo at Oldtown where they caught 1,033 fish.
A torrential rain, however, hit the fishing spot in early afternoon, keeping organizer Mike Cornachia and others from conducting the annual award ceremony that follows the popular event.
Had the weather been good, there is no doubt that there would have been twice as many young anglers and twice as many parents and friends who would have been on hand as they caught trout, catfish and sunfish and some other, unusual aquatic critters. This was the 60th year for the rodeo.
So, because the downpour eliminated the awards ceremony, there are a lot of fisherboys and fishergirls out there wondering if they won. Well, just keep reading and if you see your name all you have to do to claim your trophy is to go the Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and pick it up. That office is in the lower level of Cumberland City Hall.
