Stella B. Shaffer [Oakland]
OAKLAND - Stella B. Shaffer, 88, of 389 Dennett Road, Oakland, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at her home.
Born March 29, 1920, in Oakland, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Laura (Sines) Leighton. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Frederick William Helbig, World War II M.I.A.; one brother, Richard E. Leighton; and one son, David N. Shaffer.
Stella was a life long member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she was very active; and was a homemaker for the past 60 years.
Surviving are her husband, Q. Nordeck Shaffer of 58 years; son, Richard W. (Butch) Helbig and wife Carolyn of Oakland; her grandchildren, Theresa Helbig-Miller and husband Wayne and Jeffrey Helbig and wife Alicia, all of Oakland; great-grandchildren, Austin, Devan and Lauren Helbig and Makayla Miller; three sisters, Jean Robinette and Janet Cooper, both of Centreville, Shirley Hauser and husband Lloyd of Baltimore; one brother, Russell (Sonny) Leighton and wife Mary of Oakland; many special nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Shaffer's request her body will be cremated.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorial contributions to St. Mark's Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Garrett County.
