Mike Sawyers 9/11/17

Cumberland Times-News Outdoor Editor Mike Sawyers scans the Mineral County, West Virginia, sky for mourning doves on Sept. 11, 2017.

Cumberland Times-News Outdoor Editor Mike Sawyers doesn't just write about hunting and fishing. He does it. In fact, he does a lot of it.

Sawyers is a member of a fading group of outdoor writers across the country that believe the readers trust a columnist who knows how to properly lead a mourning dove before pulling the trigger on the shotgun. He understands first-hand the rigors of dragging a buck out of a deep hollow well after daylight and his readers respect him for it.

Sawyers can mend a fly line in a tough current, call in a gobbler with aggressive purrs and take a grandson fishing for bluegills.

For almost 39 years, Cumberland Times-News readers have been turning to the Outdoors page in the Sunday print edition and now they are getting stories quicker at times-news.com and following Sawyers on Twitter @CTNMikeSawyers.

Sharpen your fishing hooks. Practice with your bow. Tag along with Sawyers on the various Cumberland Times-News platforms - the best outdoors coverage in Maryland and pretty darn good in West Virginia, too.
