ANNAPOLIS — Bob Long, a game bird biologist with the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service has been named the agency's employee of the year for 2016.

Long, stationed on the Eastern Shore, leads game bird management throughout the state, including for wild turkeys.

A record was just set for the spring gobbler seasons when hunters checked in 4,175 birds across the state.

Long also coordinates the annual turkey counting program during July and August when volunteers across Maryland observe wild turkeys and report the gender for future management purposes. The survey helps to determine the success of the hatching season.
