LAVALE — A Lonaconing man who allegedly robbed M&T Bank's LaVale branch late Thursday morning was apprehended minutes later by Maryland State Police troopers at the nearby Arby's restaurant.

Police said Leonard Kaschenbach, 62, was armed with a handgun when he entered the bank just after 10:30 a.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money. The bank is located at 1201 National Highway, adjacent to the state police barracks.

Kaschenbach was given an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot, reportedly crossing National Highway and heading south on Campground Road.

Police said a witness helped them locate Kaschenbach in the restaurant. Kaschenbach was arrested without incident.

Investigators from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigative Unit responded to the scene and are assisting in the investigation. Personnel from the Allegany County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office also assisted.
