Mourning dove hunting season opens in West Virginia on Sept. 1.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The mourning dove hunting season in West Virginia will open on Sept. 1 and will include three segments.

• Sept. 1 through Oct. 14

• Oct. 30 through Nov. 18

• Dec. 18 through Jan. 12

The daily bag limit is 15 and hunters are allowed to have 45 birds in possession. 

Hunting hours on the first day are noon to sunset. Otherwise, dove hunting may take place from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset.

The woodcock season will be open Oct. 14 through Nov. 18 and again Nov. 27 through Dec. 5. The daily bag limit is three and the possession limit is nine.

Hunters who kill banded woodcock may report the band number online at, according to Mike Peters, game bird biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
