— CUMBERLAND — Arden Elden Varner, 100, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday March 22, 2013, at the Golden Living Center.

Born on May 30, 1912, in Dry Fork, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Adelphia Varner. He was also preceded in death by his four brothers, Clyde, Burley, Oscar, and Cloy; five sisters Ella, Maza, Zona, Mary, and Martha and step-daughter Mary DeVault.

Arden was employed for forty-five years at the Celanese Corporation in the chemical laboratory. Mr. Varner loved hunting and fishing and being in the outdoors. He also enjoyed woodworking and working on cars.  

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dessie Varner; one daughter, Marcia Ryman; step-daughter Anna Lee Hiner and late husband Frank and Betty Jenkins and late husband Jack; two grandchildren Deborah and Denise; son-in-law Jack DeVault; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Monday from noon to 1 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Marvin officiating.  

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
