ELLERSLIE — Leroy “Gert” Speelman, 87, of Ellerslie, died peacefully at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va., on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, with his loving family at his side.
He was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Bedford County, Pa., Londonerry Township, to the late Goldie (Devore) Barnhart and Gilbert Lowery. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lela Mae (Knotts) Speelman, on Jan. 8, 2011; his grandparents, George and Gertrude (Devore) Speelman, who raised him; two aunts, Hazel Ryan and Geraldine Clark; a son-in-law, Gary L. Carder and his former wife, Mary V. (O’Haver) Speelman.
He is survived by his children and step-children, Susan E. (Speelman) Carder, of Ellerslie, Thomas W. Speelman and wife Carol, of York Haven, Pa., Christian M. Harden and wife Debbie, of Hyndman, Pa., Aleta M. (Harden) Dick and husband Tom, of Jeannette, Pa., Larry D. Harden and wife Edna and Garry O. Harden and wife Lucia, both of Houston, Texas, John C. Harden and wife Sara, of Orlando, Fla., and Kenny W. Harden and wife Kay, of Hyndman; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Leroy served in the United States Army 26th Infantry Division during World War II, having been wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on Jan. 2, 1945. He was retired as a machinist from ABL. He was a life member of the VFW Oscar Jordan Post 7375, Hyndman, the DAV, the Ellerslie Outdoor Club and the Kennells Mills Sportsmans Club.
It was Leroy’s wishes that his body be donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.
A memorial and committal service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff and all the nurses on Ward 5-C and the first floor Unit B at the VA Medical Center, for all their compassion, and the excellent care he received during his stay there.
