MICHAEL R. SCARCELLI [Eckhart Mines]

ECKHART MINES — Michael Robert Scarcelli, 44, of Eckhart Mines, died on March 3, 2014.

Born May 24, 1969, he was the son of Robert Edward and Joanne Fiery Scarcelli of Little River, S.C., and formerly of Cumberland. He was predeceased by his aunt, Linda Fiery in 2011.

A pleasant and happy child, he enjoyed school at Johnson Heights Elementary and Washington Junior High in Cumberland, as well as, Sunday school, junior choir and church activities at St. John’s Lutheran Church where he became a confirmed member.  Backyard neighborhood games, church league basketball, youth soccer and football gave him an abiding love of nearly any kind of sports, which lasted his entire life. A 1987 graduate of Fort Hill High School, he did well in his classwork and he was a three year trombone player with the Sentinels marching band. Five years of piano lessons during his earlier youth contributed to his lifelong love of music.

He honorably served four years in the U.S. Navy as a storekeeper aboard the USS Guam with nine months overseas during the Persian Gulf War.

He did some college coursework at several colleges before having varied jobs which were mostly in retail. During and after this time, he acquired an addiction to alcohol, which steadily intensified. Over those many years, his parents, family, and friends who knew and cared about him, Fort Recovery, and Eckhard Methodist Church valiantly attempted to help Mike overcome his addiction without success.

He is survived by his uncles, James Scarcelli of South Carolina, Francis Scarcelli of Eckhart, Edward Fiery (Kathy) of State Line, Pa., Thurman Fiery (Bonnie) of Hagerstown, and Sam Fiery (Judy) of Hagerstown; his cousins, Stephanie Fiery Barnhart, Janet Scarcelli McPhillips, Brad Fiery, Mark Fiery, Laura Fiery Dobbs, and Megan Fiery Swank; and his longtime best friends, Jeff Serafini of Colorado and Rob Gavin of Virginia. His most devoted and constant companion dog, Onshu, was with him when he died.

Contributions in memory of Mike are suggested for Eckhart Methodist Church, PO Box 75, Eckhart Mines, MD 21528; Fort Recovery, 413 North Mechanic Street, Cumberland, MD 21502; or St. John’s Lutheran Church, 406 Arch Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.

His remains are buried at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
