AUDREY R. CLEAVENGER [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND  — Audrey R. Cleavenger, 98, died gracefully of a brief illness on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013.

Born Audrey Roberta Grimes in Sudley, on Jan. 18, 1915, she was the oldest of five children of Roy and Roberta Grimes, an Anne Arundel County farm couple. She was preceded in death by all her immediate family, her son Ashby and her husband of 73 years, Lucian Lanie.

An excellent student, Audrey completed her secretarial training at Strayer College in Washington D.C. and worked for the Treasury Department Bureau of Fine Arts. There she met Lanie Cleavenger in 1935. They were soon married and lived in D.C.

Their oldest son, Ashby, was born in 1938. In 1942, they settled in Eastport where Audrey took in boarders when her husband went off to war. Their son, Nelson, was born in 1947.

In the 1950's and 1960's Audrey worked as a legal secretary. She was fast and accurate at taking shorthand, dictation and typing.

After 36 years in Annapolis, Audrey and Lanie retired in Melbourne, Fla. for 12 years. They returned to Maryland, living in LaVale for 18 years. After Lanie's death, Audrey lived at Willow Valley Apartments in Cumberland where Kathy Pell and her entire staff provided excellent care.

Audrey was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, known for her sewing, flower gardening and crabcakes. She was also a woman of deep faith and a worker and teacher in the Churches of the Nazarene in Annapolis, Melbourne and Frostburg. She prayed and read the Bible every day and loved singing the alto part on her many favorite hymns.

Audrey is survived by her son, Nelson O. Cleavenger and his wife Reverend Rebecca J. Vardiman, of Cumberland. She will be missed by many cou-sins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A.-Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Timothy Smith and the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frostburg Church of the Nazarene, 150 Center St., Frostburg, MD 21532.
