JOSEPH C. ATHEY [LaVale]

LAVALE — Joseph C. Athey of Lavale, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in the arms of his wife of 48 years and surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on Aug. 12, 1938 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Willard (Tootie) Athey and Cecilia (Jones) Athey. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jo Athey; one brother, Williard (Junior) Athey, two sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Hite and Phyllis Rymer; and mother and father-in-law, William and Lillian (Beck) Himmler. 
He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1957. He also joined the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1955, until he signed for active duty at Mayport, Fla. in 1957 aboard the U.S. Essex Aircraft Carrier for a two year tour in the Mediterranean during the Cold War.  Upon returning home, he finished the remainder of his time in the Navy Reserves, a total of six years for his country.
He then went to work at P.P.G. Industries Works 7 as a crane operator and glass inspector taking his retirement of 30 years in 1995. He also retired from 1st United Bank in Cumberland as a maintenance supervisor. 
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Cumberland and St. Armand’s Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Fla., where he and his wife lived seven months a year. He enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, metal detecting on the beaches of Florida and being with his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Billie Jean (Himmler) Athey; three brothers, Edward C. Athey and wife Dixie, Raymond Athey Sr. and Robert Athey of Cumberland; two sisters, Saundra Schoonover of Cumberland and Linda Yockus and husband Paul; a sister-in-law, Loretta Miltenberger; and several nephews and nieces that he loved dearly.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com), 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Tormad Svensson officiating.  Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.  
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
