GERTRUDE T. (KOMPANEK) HARTSOCK [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Gertrude Theresa (Kompanek) Hartsock, 97, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at the Chateau of Cumberland.

Born June 23, 1916, in Hopewell, Va., Mrs. Hartsock was the daughter of the late Andrew J. Kompanek and Mary (Sabo) Kompanek. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Cletus Hartsock; her brothers, Rudy Kompanek, Andrew Kompanek, and Harry Kompanek; and her sisters, Pauline Kompanek, Marian Murray, and Lorraine Peters.

A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1934, Gertrude was a homemaker. She was a life-member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church where she sang in the Sanctuary Choir, taught Sunday school and confirmation classes and was active in the Women’s Society. Gertrude was very proud of her heritage and her family. Her last days were filled with wonderful memories which her daughter helped compile in a Memory Book. Mom was a strong woman and had undying faith in the Lord. Faced with her illness, she remembered a hymn our Dad sang, “It is Well with my Soul,” and it was well with her soul.  

Gertrude is survived by her daughters, Deborah Boone and husband, Charles, Cumberland, and Linda Judd and her partner, Dan Durkee of Wisconsin; and her sisters, Veronica Moore of Virginia, Theoda Lee Hohing  of Connecticut and Josephine Campbell of California. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Timothy Hartsock and wife, Stephanie, Hagerstown, Nikki Leasure, Baltimore, and Corey Judd and wife, Mindy, Cumberland; her great grandchildren, Ryan Hartsock, Timothy Hartsock, Kelsey Hartsock, Alexis Anastasio, and Zachary Judd; her sister-in-law, Margaret Hartsock, Cumberland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Centre Street United Methodist Church on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ann Atkins officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Chateau of Cumberland and the staff of the Western Maryland Health System Hospice.

The family requests the memorial contributions be made to the WMHS Hospice Education Fund, 1050 West Industrial Boulevard, Cumberland, MD 21502; or to the charity of your choice.
