JAMES R. HARE [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Corporal James Rexford Hare, 19, of Cumberland, passed away on April 30, 1951, in Korea.

Born Jan. 19, 1932, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James Ellis and Opal Virginia Hare.

Jim was a member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was captured by the North Koreans and died in a prisoner of war camp. Because of his service to our country, Jim was awarded the Purple Heart and the POW Medal posthumously. His remains were discovered in Korea and have been returned to Cumberland for a proper military burial.

He was survived by six sisters, the late Frances E. (Hare) McCarthy, Mary V. Raines, of Cumberland, Shirley D. Shipway, of Strasburg, Va., Deloris M. Burley and husband Stephen, of Ellerslie, Cindy Lou Steinmetz and husband Arthur, of Cumberland and an infant sister; eight brothers, the late Martin E. Hare, the late Edward R. Hare, the late John T. Hare, the late William R. Hare Sr., Stanley C. Hare, of Smithsburg, George D. Hare, of El Paso, Texas, Ronald “Buck” Hare, of Cumberland and Rickey S. Hare, of Charleston, W.Va., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., (www.scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jay Fretz officiating.

Interment with full military honors will be held in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Points, W.Va.
