WILLIAM A. MIERS JR. [Keyser, W.Va.]

KEYSER, W.Va. —  William A. “Huck” Miers Jr., of Hawthorne Heights, Keyser, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at his residence.

Born on Dec. 19, 1910, in New Creek, he was a son of the late William A. Miers Sr. and Lucille (Liller) Miers. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Estel “Eck” Miers and a sister, Madge Kelley.

Mr. Miers was a graduate of Keyser High School, attended Potomac State College, a graduate of Davis & Elkins and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was principal of Beryl Elementary School and a teacher of Social Science, Driver’s Education and Physical Education, plus a basketball coach at Piedmont High School. He was an avid golfer and a member of Mill Creek Country Club.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president and 20-year member of Keyser Lions Club. “Huck” was recipient of the Tri-State Potomac Valley Community Award, Dapper Dan Outstanding Citizen Award, Piedmont Community Citizen Award and Touch Down Club Outstanding Citizen Award of Morgantown. He was further honored with membership into Keyser High School Hall of Fame and Davis & Elkins Hall of Fame.

Surviving are his wife of 79 years, whom he married on Jan. 6, 1934, Harriette A. (DeBock) Miers; his daughter, Dolores A. Wilson and husband Col. (Ret.) Jack R. Wilson II; four grandchildren, Jack R. Wilson III and wife Brigetta, Daniel A. Wilson and wife Karen, Karen A. Wayland and husband Scott and Mark E Wilson and wife Angelia; eleven great-grandchildren, Meghann Wilson Medici and husband Cpt. Michael, Cpt. Jack R. Wilson IV and wife Julie, Amanda Wilson Carter and husband Justin, Alexandra Wilson, Jessica Wayland Simmons and husband Nicholas, Matthew W. Wayland, Emily Nichole Wayland, David W. Wilson, Dylan Wilson, Morgan Wilson and Tanner Wilson and two great-great-grandchildren, Malia Wilson and Kahlea Wilson.  He is also survived by a special friend, Victor Marshall and caregivers, Mable Miller, Sarah and Eric Miller.

Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home on Friday, April 5, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.  

Funeral services will be conducted in the First United Methodist Church, 32 Davis St., Keyser, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013, with the Rev. Vickie K. Minnich officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.

Interment will follow in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, W.Va.
