RICHARD “DICK” JOHNSON [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Richard “Dick” Johnson died peacefully at home on Nov. 28, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Cumberland on March 28, 1940 to William H. Johnson and Dorothy M. (Ullery) Sencindiver.

Richard graduated from Chestnut Ridge High School in New Paris, Pa., class of 1959, where he enjoyed an outstanding wrestling career. Following graduation, he served his country in the U. S. Coast Guard. He then returned home to Cumberland where he became employed with, and eventually retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co.

He enjoyed spending time with his best girl, Philly, his grandchildren, Grant and Lilly, Philly’s grandchildren, Mark and Dean, and the VanMeters, who have always been and will always be an important part of his extended family. He was also an avid golfer and a lifetime member of the Good Fellowship Club.

He lived his life surrounded by his friends and family alike. The old saying, “he never met a stranger” must have been written about him, as he was loved by all who came to meet him.

He was preceded in death by his, father, William Johnson; mother, Dorothy Sencindiver; sister, Eloise Burke; and brother, Ralph Johnson.

Richard is survived by his children, Shayna McHale of Laurel, Scott Johnson of New Windsor, and Matthew Leasure of Cumberland; his grandchildren, Grant and Lilly Johnson of New Windsor; his sisters, Connie Butler and Judy Emmart, both of Cumberland; and his brother, Larry Sencindiver of Cumberland.

A memorial reception will be held in his honor at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at the Good Fellowship Club on Virginia Avenue.
