NEW CREEK, W.Va. — Gladys Cathern Dodds, 74, of New Creek, died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va. She had been a resident of Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home for two days.
Born on March 8, 1939 at Petersburg, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John Edward and Eula Ethel (Stewart) Thorn. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Ada Ditton, Viola McAvoy and Mary Lea Leatherman; and two brothers, Richard and Henry Thorn.
Mrs. Dodds was a 1957 graduate of Keyser High School. She was a retired cosmetologist, but her love was serving the Lord at the Keyser Church of the Brethren. She loved playing the piano and singing in a Southern Gospel group called the Dodds Family for over 40 years. She and her husband operated the Rolling Acres Gospel Music Park in New Creek, holding two concerts a year. Gladys was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, but most importantly, was a great servant of Jesus Christ.
Surviving are her husband of nearly 53 years, Rev. James A. "Sonny" Dodds; her son, Charles Dodds of Fulks Run, Va.; her daughter, Marsha Short and husband Eddie Lee of Nashville, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Short of Nashville; and a special cousin, P'Nut Roy. Also surviving are three sisters, Idella M. Barr, a resident of the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, Shirley M. Cathell and husband Gene and Goldie V. Haggerty, all of Keyser; two brothers, Ernest W. Thorn and wife Virginia of Burlington, W.Va. and Otis M. Thorn and wife Linda of Antioch, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dwight Ramsey officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
