CUMBERLAND — Hazel Maddie Barbe, 85, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born April 15, 1927, on top of Polish Mountain, Flintstone, Mrs. Barbe was the daughter of the late Charles V. Crock and Edna (Hartman) Crock. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Philip Sylvester Barbe Sr., June 6, 2010; a granddaughter, Kimberly Smith; her sisters, Lona Livingood, Helen Younker; and her brothers, Willis Crock, Roy Crock, and John Crock.
Hazel retired from Sears, LaVale, and Philadelphia, Pa., with many years of service. Hazel and her husband, Phil, spent many years volunteering and helping many in need. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, S.H.I.P., and would always think of others before herself. Hazel was full of energy and had a love of life. She was a member of the Goodfellowship Club and the Democrat Club. Hazel will be sadly missed by all her friends and especially the Breakfast Group at McDonalds.
Hazel is survived by her children, Donald F. Smith and his wife, Kit, Soldotna, Alaska, Randy F. Smith and his wife, Irene, Grangeville, Idaho, James V. Smith and his wife, Harlan, Cumberland, and Donna Mae MaBee and her husband, Howard, Cumberland; and her brother, Wayne Crock, Cumberland. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Tana L. Alvarez and her children, Brittany, Zachary, and Julian, all of Tampa, Fla., Jamie A. Barbe, Galena, Nicole L. Mattingly and her husband, Patrick, and their children, Morgan and Sean Patrick Mattingly, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Philip S. Barbe Jr. and his wife, Carol Ann, and their son, Philip Michael, all of Ashburn, Va..
Hazel also leaves behind her grandchildren, Lee Smith, Charles Pennell, both of Cumberland, Tiffany Nieva of Utah, Michael Smith and wife, Kristen, and their daughter, Tierney, of California. She had a special place in her heart for her great-grandchildren, Noah and Kendall Pennell and loved to taken them on adventures. She also has step grandchildren in Soldotna, Patrick Hollingsworth, Buck Hollingsworth and his three children, Courtney, Cabrina, and Cierra. Hazel was loved and will never be forgotten by her best friends, Brenda Collins, Dave Collins, and Barbara Abe.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, April 12, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Women of the Moose Chapter 914, Ridgeley, W.Va., will conduct a service at 6 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
