CUMBERLAND — C. Larry Sweeney, 63, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at his home.
Born March 12, 1950, in Cumberland, Mr. Sweeney was the son of the late Charles F. Sweeney and Madeline B. (McDonald) Sweeney. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Wariner.
A graduate of Allegany High School, Larry was formerly employed at Gray’s Appliance Parts and Repair Center for 20 years. He then worked for the Western Maryland Consortium, Automotive Supply and then Big Lots. Larry was also a freelance photographer. He received several awards for his volunteer work with the Interfaith Consortium and for helping others. His awards included the “State of Maryland’s Governor’s Citation,” in 1990 and then again in 1998; the Certificate of Appreciation for the Family Crisis Resource Center, 1998; “Because You Care” for the Interfaith Consortium, 1990; the Volunteer Appreciation Certificate, FCI Cumberland, Federal Bureau of Prisons, 1998 and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, known as R.S.V.P., 1998.
Larry was proud to be an Irishman by descent. He loved a good beer, a joke, story or just a conversation. Larry was one heck of a conversationalist. He never met a stranger.
Larry is survived by his sisters, Jan Michaels and husband Bob, of LaVale and Bonnie Sheetz and husband Earl, of Oldtown; his brother, William “Bill” Sweeney and wife Kathy, of Grantsville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted in the Memorial Heights Baptist Church, 1419 East Oldtown Road, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Denny Michael officiating.
The family would like to have memorial donations made in Larry’s name to the Adams Family Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
