MARTIN D. “MARTY” HARSH III PH.D., P.E. [LaVale]

LAVALE — Martin “Marty” D. Harsh III, Ph.D., P.E., 60, of LaVale, went home to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at his home after a seven month battle with melanoma.

Born Sept. 28, 1953, in Williamsport, Marty Harsh was the son of Martin D. Harsh, Jr., and Betty (Kuhn) Harsh, Williamsport.

Marty was a graduate of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., where he received his undergraduate and graduate degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by Hercules and Alliant Techsystems for the past 30 years where he was the manager of the Ballistics Design Group. Marty designed the propellant configuration for the Air Force AMRAAM rocket motor, which is the premier air-to-air missile of the United States Air Force deployed around the world on various fighter aircraft. Marty was a nationally recognized rocket motor ballistician, a true “rocket scientist.” His work at ABL contributed significantly to many weapons systems currently in use by our armed forces today. Marty was also a member of the Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club for 23 years where he served as secretary for five years.

Besides his parents, Marty is survived by his wife of 28 years, Dixi (Page) Harsh; his sons, Pfc. Martin, Fort Hood, Texas, Adam, Frostburg, and Ethan, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. He also leaves behind his sisters, Jennifer Harsh, Elizabeth Doggett and husband, Richard and Laura Harsh; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marty’s life at the Memorial Heights Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at 2 p.m., for fellowship and at 3 p.m. for the service with Pastor Chan Hubbard officiating.

Many thanks to all the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, Marty requests donations be made to a cancer center of your choice or the Memorial Heights Baptist Church, 1419 East Oldtown Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.

Throughout his life, Marty’s motto was, “Make a difference…. Help somebody.” He will be sadly missed.

The Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) is in charge of the arrangements.
