JOHN F. O. DAUM [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — CUMBERLAND — John Frederick Otto Daum, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at the home of his daughter.

Born Jan. 23, 1924, in Cumberland, Mr. Daum was the son of the late Frederick Otto Daum and Gladys (Price) Daum. He was also preceded in death by his son, James “Daumie” Frederick Wilson Daum; a sister, Mary Ann “Sis” Winters; a brother, Charles Thomas Daum and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

John was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1941, where he played basketball, football, softball, and boxing exhibitions in two minute rounds. John was a United States Air Force veteran and was previously employed at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America for two years. He retired as Lieutenant from the Cumberland Police Department with 36-1/2 years of service. In his adult years, John played basketball, football, softball, and bowled for the Cumberland Police Department. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245; the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 90 where he served as past president and financial secretary.  

John was the local area figure head as a baseball coach and mentor. He was instrumental in forming the Police Boys Club where he served as Director. John was best known for his devotion as manager/coach for the Dapper Dan Dodgers for twenty years. He served as past president of the Dapper Dan Little League for 15 years. John was manager/coach of the Hot Stove Lions for over twenty years and was involved in the Golden Glove Tournaments for over ten years. John was a member of the “Has Beens.” He held various offices as well as business manager of the Old German’s Baseball and Cumberland Police Department Basketball Teams. For years, John raised cattle in the Centerville, Pa. area. He enjoyed home gardening and loved his Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Eagles.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred L. (Lease) Daum and his daughter, Donna D. Widdows and her husband  Bruce, of Cumberland. He also leaves behind his granddaughters, Nicole M. Olinger and partner Sarah Antolini and Jalin Daum Swick and husband Marshall; his great-grandchildren, Autumn and Erin Olinger, Austin, Lacey, and Leia Swick; his special family, Jim, Danette, Austin, Abigail, and Ava “Tweety” Burt, Christine, Eric, Taylor, and Trevor Rice; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, May 24, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, May 24, 2013, at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Turner officiating.

A private interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens and conducted at a later date.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
