— VIRGINIA — Dr. John Francis Carter, 82, formerly of Mount Savage, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, in Virginia.

He was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Mount Savage to the late Nicholas Carter and Sarah Ellen (Miller) Carter.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Ann Martirano and two brothers, James Carter and Thomas Carter.

John attended LaSalle High School and graduated from Beall High School in 1948. He also received his Bachelor of Science in Junior High Education from Frostburg State in 1953, his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing from the University of Maryland in 1958 and 1969. John retired as the Chief of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Martinsburg, Va.  He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Edith E. (Utt) Carter; four sons, Michael F. Carter and wife Laureen, of Columbia, S.C., John D. Carter and wife Deb, of Bentonville, Va., Kevin P. Carter and wife Barbara, of Tazewell, Va. and Terry P. Carter, of Tampa Bay, Fla.; six grandchildren, Michael, Robin, Alex, Sarah, Michael and Jody Carter; step grandchildren, Dana White, Donnie White, Logan White, Katie Lapp, Ryan Lapp, Kevin Lapp, John Rife and Matthew Rife; one great-grandchild, Liam Fairchild; one brother, Joseph V. Carter, of Mount Savage and four sisters, Rosemary Shockey, of Frostburg, Sally Tuscano, of Meyersdale, Mary Lou Dickel and husband Jim, of Mount Savage and Peggie Whitehead and husband Dale, of Mount Savage.

Friends and family will be received at Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mount Savage, on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at 10 a.m. with Father Stephen Fernandes as celebrant.

Interment will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Mount Savage.

Military honors will be accorded by VFW Old Rail Post 6025.
