WALTER W. MARTZ [Carpendale, W.Va.]

CARPENDALE, W.Va. — Walter William Martz, 78, of Carpendale, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at the Dawnview Center.

Born Sept. 13, 1934, in Wiley Ford, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harry William Martz and Mary (Hare) Martz. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Spooler and a sister, Elizabeth Ayers.

He was a graduate of Ridgeley High School.

Mr. Martz retired from the Cumberland Times-News, having been a printer. He was a member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club. Mr. Martz enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Virginia; three children, Rhonda Bognanni, of Annapolis, Doug Martz and wife Michele, of Fort Ashby, W.Va. and Jennifer Burgess and husband Jeff, of Keyser, W.Va.; one brother, John Donald Spooler, and wife Chris, of Goodyear, Ariz.; two sisters, Melba Knotts and husband Tom, of Bowling Green and Jane Kitzmiller and husband Willard, of LaVale; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Dustin and wife Meghan, Lauren, Destinee, Darian, Kayla, Nick and Mya; dear family friends, Loraine Scott and Wanda Zollner and his good friends, Shot Abe and Perry Kline.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Young officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dustin Martz, Darian Martz, Nick Smith,  Jonathan Knotts, Michael Ferris and Thomas Kitzmiller.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association for Disease Research, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702.
