— RIDGELEY, W.Va. — Joan Bernice Zimmerman, beloved mother of Tim, Kevin, Gary Michael and Karen Marie Zimmerman, went to her eternal home with Jesus on July 27, 2013 in Cumberland.

She was born Joan Bernice Strozewski (Shepherd) March 5, 1936 in Buffalo, N.Y.  

After graduating from Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy, she worked as an assistant to the Dean of Men at Canisius College until leaving Buffalo in 1962. After a brief residence in Alexandria, Va., she raised her four children in Bowie. Her marriage to Joseph Zimmerman ended in 1975. Following a 20 year career with the Hecht Company in Landover, she moved to Ridgeley, W.Va., to live with her son and his family.  

Having lost Gary Michael and Karen Marie to Cystic Fibrosis, she is survived by her sister, Barbara and husband Ronnie Smokowski, sister, Dorrie and husband Fred Dzaak, sister, Gerri and several nieces and nephews, all of Buffalo; son, Tim and his wife Diane of Ridgeley, son, Kevin who lives in Port St. Lucie, Fla.; grandsons, Timothy and David of Ridgeley; granddaughter, Kristin Zimmerman-Bolyard and husband Josh Bolyard who reside in Bowling Green, with her precious great-grandson, Tucker Pierce Bolyard; and dear friend, Jeannette Tansey of Bowie.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at South Cumberland Assembly of God, 21 East Elder St., Cumberland.
