LAVALE — John M. Furstenberg, 85, of LaVale, was reunited with the love of his life and our Lord and Savior on Monday, July 1, 2013.

Born July 28, 1927, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Carl and Dora Furstenberg. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen “Bootie” Furstenberg in 2009 and his sister, Maxine Abe. He was the last surviving member of his family.

John was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict having served in the 3rd Armored Division in Germany. After his return from his service to his country, he graduated from the Utilities Engineering Institution in Chicago. He retired as a mechanical engineer with the Otis Elevator Company after 38 years of service.

He was a lifelong member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, having served as an altar boy in his youth, a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight in 1972. John was also a lifelong member of American Legion Post 13, the Cumberland Outdoor Club, VFW Post 1411, the Goodfellowship Club and the Cumberland BPOE. He was a member of the Ridgedale Rollers Bowling League.

John is survived by his children, Diane Furstenberg Beem and husband Thomas P. Sr., of Cumberland, Denine M. Nave, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Carl A. Furstenberg, of Pennsylvania, Donna C. Furstenberg and life long partner Judy Stevens, of East Windsor, N.J. and Darla Walls and husband Mark, of Jefferson. They were also blessed with their grandchildren Thomas P. Beem Jr. and wife Ali, of Baltimore, Kevin J. Beem and wife Katie, of Bedford, Pa., Heide Nave, of LaVale, Ryan D. Nave, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Carson R. Nave, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Nicholas Furstenberg and wife Amy, of Cumberland, Missy Furstenberg, of Cumberland, Kathryn D. Walls and Justin A. Walls, of Jefferson and great-grandchildren, Carter Nave, of LaVale, Collin Cook, of Cresaptown, Kaleb, Brady and Evan Furstenberg, of Cumberland, Jayce and Averi Becker, of Cumberland and Addison Beem, of Baltimore.

John will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by Bill and Leona Porter, John Wagner, Jim and Sandy Miller, Doris Price, John Helmstetter, Teri Holsinger, Mary Ernestine Lohr, Marge Becker, Pam Mulligan, Lisa Sacks, residents of the Kensington and all his dear friends and neighbors.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Friday, July 5, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Father Greg Chervanek, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant. There will be a Christian wake at 3:30 p.m.

Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, a great-grandson and sons-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 300 E. Oldtown Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
