CUMBERLAND — Emma Jean Smith, 87, of Cumberland, died on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Bruce Dade Smith and Hazel Wanita (Beck) Smith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1943, Mrs. Smith retired from PPG Industries and was a member of Centre Street United Methodist Church, in which she was very active. She was a member of the church choir, was past president of the Womens’ Society of Christian Service, a treasurer of the Asbury Methodist Guild-Hagerstown District for many years and was involved with the Interfaith Community Pantry where she also served as coordinator of volunteers for many years. She also served as bookkeeper for Humpty Dumpty Pre-School and was a former member of the Church Board of Trustees. For many years, Mrs. Smith was treasurer for the local community Tri-State Concert Association and was also a member of Club ’43.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard H. Smith Sr., of Cumberland; a son, Richard H. Smith Jr. and wife Diane, of Westminster; two grandchildren, Bryan M. Smith, of Washington, D.C. and Kristen D. Clark and husband Dave, of Hanover, Pa. and a great-granddaughter, Autumn E. Clark, of Hanover, Pa.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ann Atkins officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
