— LAVALE — Charles “Chuck” F. Schelble Jr., of LaVale, died on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center, following a courageous battle with T-cell lymphoma.

Born Feb. 10, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles F. Schelble Sr. and Hazel L. (Twigg) Schelble.  He was also predeceased by his brother, Dr. Robert P. Schelble; his sister, Helen Schelble Lint and his niece, Susan Schelble Kennedy.

He was a graduate of the old Mount Savage High School, class of 1940. A member of LaVale United Methodist Church, he served as usher for many years and served as coordinator of the church food pantry for many years. He was a retired professional salesman from Spoerl’s Pontiac-Cadillac Inc.

He was twice Past Master and 60+ year member of Kemp Lodge 154, A.F. & A.M.; Past Grand Inspector for the Grand Lodge of Maryland; Salem Chapter 18, Royal Arch Masons; Antioch Commandery 6, Knights Templar and Ali Ghan Shrine, where belonged to the Past Masters Unit. He was also a member of Fort Cumberland Post 13, American Legion and a 60+ year member of Old Rail Post 6025 V.F.W., Mount Savage.

In earlier years he had been active in the American Heart Association, County United Way and Mount Savage and LaVale Lions Clubs.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the European Theater of Operations in World War II, in the 766th Railway Shop Battalion and in the Korean conflict in the 2998 Engineers Treadway Bridge Company.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Lee (Hunt) Schelble; two daughters, Barbara A. Metzger (Brad), of LaVale and Christine H. Schelble (Scott Starns), of Georgetown, Ky.; two grandchildren, Kate Metzger, of LaVale, and Daniel Metzger, of Paris, Va.; a niece, Carol (Lint) Winscott, of Santa Fe., N.M. and a nephew, Charles “Chip” F. Schelble III, of Ponce Inlet, Fla.

Friends will be received at Hafer Funeral Service-Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Officers and members of Kemp Lodge 154, A.F. & A.M. will conduct a masonic memorial service in the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack George officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.  

Serving as pallbearers will be members of Kemp Lodge.

The family requests in lieu of floral tributes to the deceased, contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

The family wishes to thank the personnel of Frostburg Village Nursing Care for their kindness, compassion and competence in caring for “Chuck” during his residence there.
