LOIS V. ATKINSON [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Lois Vivian Atkinson, 87, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013.

Born May 12, 1926, in Ellerslie, Mrs. Atkinson was the daughter of the late Harvey Earl Miller and Bertha Sophia (Barnhart) Miller.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harry W. Atkinson, Jan. 2, 2010; two brothers, Herbert Clair Miller and Jacob Earl Miller; and two sisters, Andrey Coughenour and Flora Alma Connor.

Lois was formerly employed at various retail stores including Turby’s Coffee Room in the late 1940s; the Darling Shop in the late 1950s; the Little Debbie Dress Shop; Town and Country; the Heinrich’s Ladies Shop; Harvey’s Jewelry Shop; and she managed the Green Stamp Store for 10 years. Lois was a member of the Jean Rowland Circle and Melvin United Methodist Church.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Janet (Atkinson) Brilliant, Plano, Texas; and her son, H. Douglas Atkinson and wife, Virginia, Danville, Va. She also leaves behind her grandsons, Jay Atkinson and Chris Atkinson, both of Cumberland; her granddaughter, Jennifer Bates, Danville; two brothers, John Miller, Johnstown, Pa. and Stanley Miller and wife, Lehoma, Saint Claire Shores, Mich.; her sister, Emily E. Smith, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland,  ( on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dan Taylor officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Lois’ name to the Union Rescue Mission, Post Office Box 1614, Cumberland, MD 21501-1614.
