JOHN S. “SAM” SNYDER [Cumberland]

Samuel “Sam” Snyder, 89, of

Cumberland, died Friday, Jan.

10, 2014 at the Allegany Health

Nursing and Rehabilitation

after a brief stay.

Born April 2, 1924 in Oconoco,

W.Va., he was the son of the

late Archie Snyder and

Maude (Hockman) Snyder. He

was preceded in death by his

wife, Ella R. Snyder in 2006;

and one brother, Jack R. Snyder.

Sam was a U.S. Army veteran

of World War II. In his early

years, he enjoyed riding

motorcycles having biked

across the United States on

his Harley Davidson. Sam

worked as a gas station attendant/

mechanic at Joe’s Texaco,

on Oldtown Road; later he

became a truck driver at the

Celanese Corporation. After

his retirement from the

Celanese, he worked for Ort’s

Bakery and DNR Trucking.

He was a very hard worker

and loved the outdoors. He

especially liked mowing, gardening

and plowing snow.

Surviving are two daughters,

Jody L. Wengerd, North

Liberty, Iowa and Lisa K.

Lloyd and husband Frank,

Cumberland; three granddaughters,

Cheyenne E.

Wengerd, Olivia L. Wengerd,

and Amanda P. Wengerd, all of

Iowa; two grandsons, Trevor

C. Lloyd and Ryan C. Lloyd,

both of Cumberland; and his

special friends and neighbors

in the “hollow”.

Friends will be received at

the Scarpelli Funeral Home,

P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland,

on Saturday, Jan. 18,

2014 from noon until 1 p.m. A

memorial service will follow at

1 p.m. by son-in-law, Frank E.

Lloyd Jr.

Inurnment will be in the

Maryland State Veterans

Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
