WILLIAM H. SMITH JR. [Cumberland]


CUMBERLAND — William Henry Smith Jr., 74 of Cumberland, and formerly of Eldersburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011 at Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland.  
Born Nov. 16, 1937 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William Henry Sr. and Rose E. Hood Smith. He was the husband of Dorothy Smith of Cumberland. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Smith.
He was a Navy veteran and had served in Korea. He was a heavy equipment operator for many years with A & P Company.  He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and played horse collar for the ODC Outdoor Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children, James Colgan of Westminster, Billie Jean Cooper and spouse Jeremy of Sykesville, Michele Snow and spouse Wesley of Westminster, Kimberly Bears and spouse Timothy of Owings Mills, and Cheryl Morgan and spouse Keith of Hampstead; step-children, Roger Twigg Jr. and spouse Karen of Centreville, Ross Twigg and spouse Amy of Pasadena, and Andrew Twigg and spouse Megan of Linthicum; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 17 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grand-children.
He was predeceased by his son, Michael Colgan; his sisters, Ellen Breeden, Gladys Carfine, and Edith Stevenson; and by his step-daughter Tonia Swick.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 23, 2011 at 7 p.m. at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.  
Interment will be private.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for the benefit of his spouse, or to the American Cancer Society.
