RALPH T. “CHICK” JOHNSON [Brandywine]

BRANDYWINE — Ralph Todd “Chick” Johnson, 87, Sergeant First Class U.S. Army (Ret.), died peacefully Nov. 19, 2012, at home in Brandywine.

Born Sept. 21, 1925 in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Clarence Johnson and the late Delcie Blanche Johnson.

Mr. Johnson attended Beall High School in Frostburg, and enlisted in the Army in 1943. He proudly served his country overseas with tours in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his time as a professional soldier, Mr. Johnson also spent time at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Camp McCall, North Carolina, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Atlantic Beach and Miami Beach, Fla., Fort Carson, Colorado and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served in airborne infantry, explosive ordnance disposal and combat engineer assignments as an instructor, operations sergeant and first sergeant, and was awarded 17 medals during his active duty career, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm in recognition of deeds of valor or heroic conduct while in combat with the enemy, and an Army Commendation Medal, before retiring with honor in 1971.

After his retirement from active duty service, Mr. Johnson made his home in Brandywine, where he worked for Levitz Furniture until retiring in 1983. He loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed woodworking, crabbing, boating and camping.   

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Ann Johnson, of Brandywine; a son, BUC/MDV Michael Todd Johnson, U.S. Navy,(Cheryl Robinson) of Portsmouth, Va.; a daughter, Brenda Steen (Ralph) of Bristow, Va.; grandchildren, Caitlin, Mackenzie and Nicholas Steen of Bristow; and many friends and family.

Arrangements were handled by Williams Funeral Home in Indian Head.

A private service of interment will be held at Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.
