Cumberland Times-News

— ARTEMAS, Pa. — Helen Jeanetta Jay, 70, of Clear Ridge Road, Artemas, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1942 in Hopewell, Pa.; a daughter of the late J. Curtis and Josephine (Bridenstine) Browell.

She grew up in the area known as Yellow Creek, Hopewell, with her parents and six brothers and one sister.  She was a graduate of Northern Bedford High School, class of 1959. As a young girl, taking care of others became a part of her daily routine. She learned to sew, cook meals in large quantities and bake. She enjoyed reading, music and also playing the piano and the trumpet. On Feb. 6, 1960 in Yellow Creek she married Allen M. Jay.

She worked as a homemaker and as a partner on their family owned dairy farm. Her day started early in the morning and most days she was the last to go to sleep at night. Since 1983, she maintained the burial records for the Fairview Cemetery.  In the community she was known as the cake lady. For the last 40 years she baked and decorated birthday, wedding and all occasion cakes. At home, she was known as a devoted wife who worked alongside her husband, a loving mother who disciplined you when you needed it and an understanding grandmother who listened and allowed you to make a mess. In her lifetime, she prepared many meals, mended many torn work pants and bandaged many bruises. She always took the time to read her daily devotions.

She leaves behind her husband and the following family, three children, Catharine married to Warren Shatzer, Clearville, Pa., Patricia married to A. Edward Clark, Clearville, Bryan Jay married to Tammy (Blubaugh), Artemas.

She will always be remembered by her nine grandchildren, Elaina Carroll, Allie Frear, Luke Clark, Kelley Jay, Jacob Jay, Erin Jay, Nathaniel Clark, Elizabeth Jay and Andrew Jay.

Helen is also survived by siblings, Joseph Browell, Honey Brook, Pa., Ralph Browell, Hopewell, Etta Jean Collier, Shippensburg, Pa., Daniel Browell, St. Thomas, Pa., David Browell, Hopewell, and Dennis Browell, Hope-well.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Browell; and two infant daughters.

Helen never traveled the world, never flew in an airplane, and never spoke at huge assemblies but she made a difference and influenced the lives of those who knew her and she will be sadly missed.
