BETTY J. DEATELHAUSER [Hagerstown]

HAGERSTOWN — Betty Jane Deatelhauser, 79, of Potomac Towers, Hagerstown, formerly of Cumberland, died Friday, July 4, 2014, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her loving family.

Born, April 29, 1935, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Lottie Gertrude Dombrowski.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leonard Deatelhauser Sr., who was the love of her life for 49 years; and her sister, Patricia Dombrowski.

She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1953 and went on to marry Chuck right after graduation. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Cumberland until she moved to Hagerstown in 1998 and then attended St. Mary’s until her health failed.

Betty Jane was a sales clerk at Ankeney’s Office Supply Store for 29 years until she retired to take care of her late husband. While she was at Potomac Towers, she loved going to Bingo and to the dances they had for the tenants. She was a member of the Tenants Association and was very involved in the activities they had for the residents.

Of all her joys, none compared to her love of family. She married her one and only love of her life right out of high school in 1953. They were both working at the Liberty Theatre in Cumberland, and when he walked in Betty Jane said, “That man over there is going to be my husband,” and she was right.

Betty Jane is survived by one daughter, Cathy S. Santiago and her husband Richard, Hagerstown; two sons, Charles L. Deatelhauser Jr. and his wife, Judy of Schertz, Texas and William D. Deatelhauser and his wife Tammy, of Cumberland. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Tara Powell of Hagerstown, Stacey Little and husband, Gemayle of McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, Kelly Alma, Joey Alma and his wife, Cindy and Krista Deatelhauser, all from Schertz, Tonya Deatelhauser and Will Suter, Charles Deatelhauser and Elisabeth Humberson, all of Cumberland; 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; her sister, Doris J. Alger of Virginia; William Kunis, brother- in-law of Cumberland; a host of nieces and nephews; and her best friend, roommate and caregiver for the past 10 years of her life, Margaret Andre.

A special thank you to Tara Powell, who was the caregiver for her grandmother the last two weeks of her life and to Washington County Hospice, what an amazing group of people, you will forever be in our hearts and our prayers!

Family and friends are invited Tuesday, July 8, 2014, to Harman, Kenworthy and Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, for viewing from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor Jason Matthews from Gateway Ministry will officiate.

Burial will be at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, 14205 Pleasant Valley Road, NE, Flintstone, at 2 p.m., where she will be laid to rest with her husband.
