DONALD R. HELMSTETTER [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Donald Richard Helmstetter passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014, at his residence.

Don was born on July 27, 1939, in Cumberland, to the late Ferman J. Helmstetter and Mae. C. (Clinedinst) Helmstetter. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Barbara Jean Helmstetter; a brother, Edwin A. Helmstetter; a son, Donald T. Helmstetter; a sister- in-law, Margaret C. Helmstetter; and brothers-in-law, Lou Chiccehitto and Tom Lloyd.

A graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1957, Donald started his career as a sheet metal apprentice in 1958. After Don’s four year apprenticeship with Walter N. Yoder and Sons, he continued working throughout the area in the industries as a lead foreman. After many years working in the sheet metal trade, Don chose to open his own welding shop where he
continued to work his beautiful magic with metal. His craftsmanship was second to none. He could be found at his shop seven days each week working on many projects and helping friends in need.

Along his journey he made many friends and could be found at the Bel Air McDonald’s each morning where they met to discuss family, health issues, NASCAR, world events, and of course work. Don had many cherished friends and valued their friendship. Don was a charitable person, always available to help individuals as well as organizations that he held membership in, The Cresaptown Eagles 2883, Cresaptown Sportsman Club, Inc., Outdoor Club, Good Fellowship Club, Democrat Club, Haystack Mountain Sportsman’s Club, Moose Lodge, and a social member of the American Legion-Fort Cumberland Post No. 13. Don was very supportive of the Cresaptown VFD. He helped with their fund raisers selling tickets and participating in their events.

Don will be sadly missed by his soul mate of 34 years, Glenda Welch; sisters, Eva Mae Lloyd of Fort Meyers, Fla., Janet Riley and husband Mike of Columbus, Ohio; brother, John Helmstetter of LaVale; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Those wishing to honor Don’s memory may do so by sending contributions to the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com) in Cresaptown, on Monday, July 7, 2014, from 3 to 5 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home at 5 p.m.
