CHARLES J. SNYDER [Cumberland]

— CUMBERLAND — Charles James Snyder, 88, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born on July 17, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late H. Raymond and Mabel Ruth (Crawford) Snyder. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan M. Snyder-Stanley.

Mr. Snyder was a United States Navy Veteran during the World War II Era. He served in the Seabees in Saipan Japan. Mr. Snyder retired from the United States Postal Service in 1986 as a supervisor. He was a member of the S.S. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the American Philatelic Society, and the local stamp collecting club in Cumberland. Mr. Snyder loved stamp collecting, woodworking, and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Snyder of Cumberland; three daughters, Julie A. (Snyder) Davis and husband Jerry of Cumberland, Michelle Snyder and husband Chuck Meyer of Newark, Del., Jennifer L. (Snyder) Flegal and husband Bob of Cumberland; one brother, Raymond C. Snyder and wife Nancy Aurora, Ohio; six grandchildren, Krista R. Ryan and Zach Miller, Jamie L. Meyer, Keith D.S. Meyer, Sean A.S. Meyer, Lissa C. Rowan and Jillian R. Flegal; several nieces and nephews; best friend Jim King.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com) 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Mountains, Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veteran’s Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 716 Furnace Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
