JOSEPH E. “EDDIE” MCDADE [Cumberland]

— CUMBERLAND — Joseph “Eddie” Edward McDade, 94, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Allegany Health, Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Feb. 3, 1919, in Irwin, Pa., Mr. McDade was the son of the late James Leo McDade and Sarah Ella (Michaels) McDade. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Michael Leo McDade, James Victor “Mickey” McDade and John Arthur “Art” McDade; his sisters, Sister Rose Ellen McDade, O.S.F., Pauline (Mc-Dade) Sell, Margaret (Mc-Dade) Laing and Theresa McDade: a very close niece, Sharon McDade-Watson; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Eddie joined the United States Army/Air corps, June 1940. He was a PFC in the 20th Squadron 2nd Bomb Group stationed at Langley Air Force Base. Eddie attended the Casey School of Aeronautics in Newark, N.J., where he received training in aircraft and engine mechanics. Eddie was stationed at Langley AFB until World War II broke out, Dec. 7, 1941. He then served in Guam and North Africa. Eddie was stationed in Japan during the Korean War.

In 1960, Eddie retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. He was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mount Savage, and the Knights of Columbus for 66 years. Eddie worked at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz., for 27 winter seasons returning to his home in Mount Savage for the summers. In 1993, he retired to his family home in Mount Savage. “Uncle” was never married but he was a father figure to many of his nieces and his nephew. Eddie was a devout Catholic who loved his country and his family.

Eddie is survived by his nieces and nephews, Frances “Fran” Burke-Angel, Alexandria, Va., Nancy Billard and husband, Frank, Cumberland, Gail McNeelege and husband, Glenn, Denver, Colo., Erin Elkins and husband, Michael, Columbia, S.C., Michelle “Mickey” McDade, Jimmy Sell, both of Cumberland, Patricia Shuck and husband, Bill, Alexandria, Beverly McCaslin and husband, Will, Burleson, Texas and Linn Watson, LaVale.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will conduct a service at 8 p.m. The Rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mount Savage, on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at 10 a.m.

Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be his great-nephews, Eric Koelker, Ryan Burke, Paul Abellera, Mark Abellera, Shane McDade, and Kyle Elkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, Post Office Box 566, Cumberland, MD 21501 or to Saint Anthony’s Place, 109 North Smallwood St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
