MARY A. WINDEMUTH [Mount Savage]

MOUNT SAVAGE — Mary Alice Windemuth, 84, of Mount Savage, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born August 1, 1929, in Frostburg, Mrs. Windemuth was the daughter of the late John C. Nolan and Beatrice A. (Deffenbaugh) Nolan. She was also preceded in death by a brother, George F. (Sam) Nolan; a son-in-law: John D. Dennison; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mary Alice graduated from Saint Patrick’s Catholic School, Mount Savage, and graduated from Allegany High School, Class of 1947. She was always active as a wife and mother who could be counted on to chaperone dances, band trips and participate in booster projects for Mount Savage School from 1962 through 1966. Mary Alice enjoyed league bowling, going to tournaments, and attending concerts. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Ireland. Her life was devoted to taking care of her family and enjoying many friends.

Mary Alice worked at McCrory's Department store as a clerk. She made home visits as a census worker. She earned a position as a clerk for the Post Office, and accumulated her hours toward retirement by working between the Mount Savage Post Office and the evening shift in Cumberland. Mary Alice served as the Officer in Charge at the Ellerslie Post Office. She was appointed Postmaster of the Mount Savage Post Office and worked in that position until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mount Savage, and the Sodality. She was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Mary Alice enjoyed seeing and talking to the many people who frequented the Post Office and took much pleasure in watching the young families and their children grow up. She enjoyed meeting people and sharing time with them. Mary Alice was an avid reader, enjoyed card games, and other mind challenges. She kept in contact with old friends via Internet, and enjoyed computer time. She spent many           hours playing mind-stimulating games.

Mary Alice is survived by her husband of 66 years, Kenneth Charles Windemuth; and her daughter, Carol Windemuth-Dennison, Cumberland; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, (www. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at 1 p.m.

Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mary Alice’s name to the Mount Savage Volunteer Fire Department, 15701 Iron Rail Road, Mount Sav-age, MD 21545.
