HELEN CAGLE [Lake Wylie, S.C.]

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — The world lost a friend when Helen Cagle left it on Sept. 22, 2013. Old age robbed her of virtually every capability, but try as it might, it couldn’t deprive her of her smile which stayed with her until the very end. Helen was a people person, a Greeter at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte where she was a charter member and one of the founders of the church choir, not surprising since she herself was an accomplished classical pianist at age 14. She also served as surrogate mother to her then teenage son’s friends. They were always welcome at her house.

Helen was born in Frostburg in 1912 to John and Ida Mae Dudley Lafferty, graduated from Beall High School and attended Welsh Memorial Baptist Church until her husband, Donald, was transferred to Charlotte in 1953.

Preceding her in death were husbands Donald C. Jeffries and Joel Cagle and brothers Roy and Louis Lafferty.

Helen is survived by her son, Don Jeffries; daughter-in-law, Joann; grandsons Sean (wife Michelle) and Scott; great-grandsons Paul and David, sister Laura Layman, of Frostburg, and niece Joann Hall, of Butler, Pa.

A celebration of her life will be held in the Gordon Weekley Chapel on the grounds of Providence Baptist, Friday, Sept. 27, at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. David Jordan officiating.

Interment will take place there immediately thereafter.

The Jeffries family would like to thank family friends Helen and Brett Hart, members of the church group Care Links, the Providence’s 3rd graders and Lake Wylie Assisted Living caregivers for their love and support.

The family will receive friends at a reception following the service.
