JOHN J. “JAY” ROBINSON IV [Charleston, S.C.]

CHARLESTON, S.C. — John Joseph “Jay” Robinson IV died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, surrounded by friends and family.

Born October 26, 1943 in Cumberland, Jay was a 1961 graduate of Allegany High School.  

He was an Eagle Scout and served on the staff at Camp Potomac. As career Navy, he served in the U.S. Canal Zone (Panama), Norfolk, Va., Puget Sound, Wash., New London, Conn., and Edinburgh, Scotland before settling and eventually retiring in Charleston. He retired as Chief Of the Boat, the highest attainable honor for enlisted personnel in the Navy’s submarine fleet.  

Jay was the son of the late Dr. John J. Robinson and Betty Whitworth Robinson of Cumberland.  

He is survived by daughters, Brittney Ossa and Devon Robinson and two special step-children, Frank Caddell and Crystal Mercer of Charleston; as well as brothers, Donald P. Robinson and wife Holly of Frostburg, Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson and wife Laura of Oakland; sister, Laurie Berkow and husband Jan of Pittsburgh, Pa.; along with numerous nieces and nep-hews.

Jay’s body was cremated and his remains will be buried at sea at his request.  

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed in his honor to the Medical University of South Carolina’s Transplant Center, the “It’s In the Bag” domestic hunger program at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Oakland or Faith Presbyterian Church in LaVale.
