FROSTBURG- LeRoy Elias Skidmore, 97, of Frostburg, died Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Egle Nursing and Rehab Center.
Born Feb. 9, 1916 in Borden Mines, he was the son of the late Elias Skidmore and Idabell (Rephann) Skidmore. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry LeRoy Skidmore; and a daughter, Rhonda Kergan.
LeRoy served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 2nd Armored Division called," Hell on Wheels" in the European Theater. He was retired from the Allegany County Roads Department. He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the American Legion Farrady Post 24. He enjoyed gardening and making his own wine.
He is survived by his wife, Esther (Cavey) Skidmore, Frostburg; two daughters, Lorna Skidmore and Ken Lintz, Cumberland and Paula Skidmore and Tom Winebrenner, Cumberland; grandchildren, Timothy L. Bishop, Travis Bishop and wife Nichole, Jessica Tart and husband Josh, James "Cricket" Bowser Jr. and wife Cristina; and five great-grandchildren, Peyton Gordon, Connor Gordon, Ava Bishop, Arabella Bishop, Baylen Bishop, and Allison Bowser. Also, a special niece, Joe Ann Myers. Leroy was the last surviving member of his family.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Jeffries officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Timothy L Bishop, Travis Bishop, James Bowser Jr., and Josh Tart.
American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the graveside.
