THOMAS J. MINKE [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Thomas James Minke, 86, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the New Hope Assisted Living Facility.

Born Nov. 17, 1926, in Cumberland, Mr. Minke was the son of the late Leroy “Roy” Minke and Agnes M. (Diehl) Minke. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Louise Minke, May 11, 2007.

A United States Army veteran of World War II and the Merchant Marines in Korea, Tom earned the Purple Heart. With his brother, Donald, Tom built and ran Minke’s Pool and the Cottage Inn, and retired from the United States Postal Service. Tom loved to fish, hunt, play gold, play cards, and to entertain company.

Tom is survived by his son, T. Gary Minke and his wife, Karen, Coleman, Fla.; his daughter, Jennifer Minke and her partner, Julia, Baltimore; his grandson, Quinn Roman Minke; his brother, Donald L. Minke; his sister-in-law, Anna Burkey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Father Greg Chervenak, O.F.M. Cap., as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.  

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 Honor Guard.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Catholic Charities, 320 Cathedral St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

The family would like to thank New Hope Assisted Living for his care since May. They are especially grateful to Amy Crites-Turner for her constant care and companionship during the past 18 very difficult months.
