GEORGE M. WILLIAMS [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — George Machir Williams died Friday, July 27, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1933, in Moorefield W.Va., the son of Machir Inskeep and Margaret Ann Seymour Williams.  Mr. Williams was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Vincent Williams.  

He was educated in the public schools of West Virginia and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1954. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Social Fraternity and a member of Chi Beta Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternities. He received a Masters and a PhD degree in Physics from West Virginia University in 1964 and 1967 respectfully.  He was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma and Sigma Xi honoraries.  

Dr. Williams was an Air Intelligence Officer in the United States Navy serving in the Western Pacific during the Cold War.  He attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve and retired in 1977.  

Dr. Williams had a career at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory for 29 years and retired in 1994 as an expert hazard analyst.  Dr. Williams was internationally recognized for his expertise in the electrostatic hazards of explosives and rocket propellants presenting papers in the United States and abroad. He was a certified safety professional, a member of the American Rocket Society, the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Society of Safety Engineers, and the American Physical Society.  

Following his retirement, Dr. Williams established a consulting business involving explosives and electrostatics and served on the National Fire Protection Association’s Committee on Static Electricity assisting in the rewriting of their safety standards.

Dr. Williams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, the superintendant of Sunday school, and as a Ruling Elder. He actively supported the 4-H clubs of Allegany County as camp and project instructor and was on the Board of the Allegany County 4-H Scholarship Fund.

In West Virginia he was a 4-H All Star, participating in fund raising activities for the International 4-H Youth Exchange Program and volunteering in their summer camping program.  He was an outdoors person, loving to hunt, fish, and observe wildlife; he was a member of the NRA and chairman of the board of directors of the New Creek Mountain Sportsman Club Inc., for 15 years.  His hobbies included photography, and stamp collecting. He was a member of the Allegany County Historical Society, Allegany County Civil War Round Table, and Sons of Confederate Veterans, Moorefield.  He was also a member of the Allegany County Genealogical Society and a Williams Family Genealogist.  

Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Kay; his daughter, Sarah Ann Parker and husband Michael, Loganville, Ga.; his daughter, Barbara Kay Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio; son, James Machir Williams and wife Teresa, Liberty Township Ohio; two brothers, Renick Cunningham Williams and wife Betty of Moorefield, Edward McSherry Williams and his wife Pat of Moorefield; a sister, Katherine Sidney Gooding and her husband Paul of Campobello, S.C.; three grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., Cresaptown, on Monday, July 30, 2012, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Gamble officiating.  

A committal service will be held at Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
