LAWRENCE S. “LARRY” BREHM [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Lawrence Samuel “Larry” Brehm, 94, longtime resident of Cumberland, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home.

Born on March 31, 1919, he was the son of the late Frank L. And Alma Onetia (Schewbridge) Brehm. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Christina Henrich Brehm in 1998; his sisters, Nellie Brehm and Betty Hendrick; brother, Warren Brehm; son-in-law, Frank Coffman; grandson, David S. Coffman.

Larry was a retired electrician and a member of IBEW, Local 307, where he worked as a Master Electrician and was also the safety coordinator for many years. He served his country during World War II, as a member of the United States Coast Guard, serving aboard the U.S.S. Savage (DE 586).He was also very active in various square dancing clubs and bowling leagues.  

Mr. Brehm was a Water Safety Instructor with the Red Cross, teaching beginner swimming classes, canoeing for the scouts and his biggest accomplishment, working with handicapped children at the old YMCA and Allegany College pools. This brought the greatest joy to him, seeing these special children being able to overcome their fear of water and be able to swim.  

His greatest honor was in receiving the Henreitta Sch-warzenbach Memorial Award (1968) sponsored by the Dapper Dan Club. He was very proud and humble to receive this award for teaching the handicapped swimming.  

Surviving are his daughters, Marie E. Coffman and husband, Kennith “Skip” Gray, Carpendale, W.Va., Sandra McCormick and husband, John F. McCormick Jr., of Cumberland; his sister, Pauline Cioni of Cumberland; brother, Mink Brehm and wife Jean of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Brehm of Cumberland; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brehm is also survived by his grandchildren, Christa M. Geib and husband Jan of Lexington S.C., Duane J. McCormick and wife Christina of Urbana, Dr. Jennifer Coffman and husband, Dr. Fletcher Linder of Waynesboro, Va., and Nicol M. McCormick of Cumberland; great-grandchildren, Alexander A. Serrano of Cumberland, Austen C. Linder, Waynesboro, Va., Gabrielle C. Linder of Waynesboro, Va, Hunter C. Geib of Lexington S.C., and Kevin M. McCormick of Urbana.

As per Mr. Brehm’s wishes, there won’t be a viewing and he will be cremated and returned to his wife’s side at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap where they will again be together forever.

The Coffman/Gray and McCormick families would like to thank the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, especially the second floor and physical therapy department for the excellent care given to Mr. Brehm during his time at the nursing home.
