CUMBERLAND — John “Joe” Joseph Devlin, 86, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born March 24, 1926, in Lonaconing, Mr. Devlin was the son of the late Joseph Thomas Devlin and Bertha (Miller) Devlin. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, George Geatz and a niece, Debbie Geatz.
A United States Naval veteran of World War II, Joe was previously employed by the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America then as a school bus contractor for the Allegany County Public School System until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma L. Devlin; his daughters, Carol Jean Sullivan, of Ocean Pines, Jo Ellen George and husband Craig, of Nokesville, Va. and Shirley Hawkins and husband John, of Cumberland. Joe is also survived by his sister, Marion Geatz, of Cumberland; his grandchildren, John Hawkins and wife Chantae, Bryant Hawkins, all of Cumberland, Kyle Hawkins, of Johnstown, Pa., Brittani George and Jeremy George, both of Nokesville, Va., as well as his special K9 friend, Scooby Doo.
A committal service will be conducted at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Keith Aguila officiating.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post 13 American Legion.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Joe’s name to the Grace Baptist Church, 211 Greene St., Cumberland, MD 21502; or to the charity of your choice.
