BETTY L. (ADAMS) EVANS [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — Betty Lou (Adams) Evans, 85, died suddenly on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles R. “Ray” Evans, who passed away eight days before her, on Nov. 19, 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents, David R. and Margaret (Kuckenbrod) Adams; her brothers, David R. Adams Jr., Alvin G. Adams, and Wayne M. Adams; and by two great-grandchildren, Faith and Gabriel Hansel.

Betty is survived by her five children, Darcy DuVall and husband Bill, Carol Evans-Muller and husband Chick, David R. Evans and wife Sandy, Suzie Snyder and husband Jimbo, and Beth Evans. Betty, “Meema”, is also survived by eight grandchildren, Billy DuVall and wife Julie, Matt Evans and wife Tracey, Jessica Hansel and husband Todd, Josh DuVall, Ryan Evans, Jolie Nunn and husband George, Jenny Edmonds and husband Rob, and Bryant Snyder and wife Jenny, by two step-grandchildren, Lisa Imler and husband John and Kara Leddy and husband Mike. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Elijah, Aidan, Abbey, Olivia, Amelia, Mason, Drew, Jessica, Hailey, Luke, Joey and Mya; and by four step-great-grandchildren, Mariah Dove, Shaniece, Keisha and Kristen Nunn. Betty is also survived by her sister, Sara Clapper and husband Richard; sisters-in-law, Teenie Adams, Ruth Adams and Rose Evans; brother-in-law, Bob and sister-in-law Evelyn Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was born in Johnstown, Pa. She graduated from Deering High School in Portland, Maine in 1944, then moved with her family to Cumberland in 1946. She worked at Rosenbaum’s Department Store and Potomac Edison. Later she was employed by the Buddy Dale Hat Shop, and Watson Insurance. She concluded her career as the secretary for Carpenters and Millwright Local Union 1024, working there from February 1969, until her retirement in August 1989.

Betty was a 4-H Club leader for the young people in the area for a number of years, which also enabled her to spend more time with her children. She touched many young lives being a friend and a role model. She attended Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and was involved in the community. During her retirement years, she and Ray enjoyed vacationing, vegetable gardening, and creating flower gardens (which were featured during the Garden Show when Betty was 70 years old). She took pride in teaching her granddaughters the art of sewing. They created a home, “Shangri-La” for their family, friends and especially their grandchildren to enjoy.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com), 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Saturday Dec. 1, 2012 from 1 to 2 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to a favorite charity.

Inurnment will be conducted at a later date at the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
