— ECKHART — Gerald K. “Pete” Rafferty passed away on Dec. 5, 2012 at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.  

Pete was a loving husband, father and friend and was dedicated to the happiness of his family and friends. He resided with his wife Shirley for the last 49 years in Eckhart.

Born June 27, 1936 in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Norbert and Elsie Rafferty .

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Patricia; his son-in-law, David Lane; and a dear friend Katherine Shealey, who is like a daughter. He is also survived by the following siblings and family, Lonnie Rafferty, his wife Barbara and their children, Jack Rafferty and his wife Donna and their children, and sister, Regina Morgan and many other nieces,nephews and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by the following siblings, Patricia Lipinski, Norbert Rafferty, Thomas Rafferty, Kathleen Cryer.

He was a devoted Catholic and member of St Michaels Parish in Frostburg. He served our nation in the United States Marine Corp and also the Maryland National Guard for over 20 years. Anyone who ever met Pete was touched by his warm smile, open heart, compassion and his desire to help others in need. He spent many years serving the community from coaching Little League Baseball to being a member of the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus, the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers and other various organizations.

Pete was an amazing man and will be truly missed by his family and many friends. What will be missed the most is his big warm smile and gentle laugh.

Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 at St. Michael Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Father Edward Hendricks as celebrant.

Pete will be laid to rest at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

American Legion Farrady Post 24 will accord military honors at the cemetery.
