— WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Margaret McAuley Preckel, 95, of West Lafayette, Ind., died Sunday, June 30, 2013, in her home.  

Born on March 14, 1918, in Huntington, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Auley and Bernice Veitch McAuley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph F. Preckel.  

She graduated in 1937 from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Fla. and in 1942 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.

She was employed by Hercules, Inc. in Wilmington, Del., for two years. She taught at Frostburg State University for 24 years, retiring in 1989 as Professor of Chemistry. She was a member of the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Omeaga.

She is survived by three daughters, Ruth VanLaningham, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Norma Gerard, of Boston, Mass. and Jean Preckel, of Morgantown, W.Va.; a son, Paul Preckel, of West Lafayette; one brother; one sister; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

The body will be cremated.  

A memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Hippensteel Funeral Home, 822 N. 9th St., Lafayette, Ind.
