WILLIAM F. “BILL” DAVIS [Keyser, W.Va.]

“Together Again”

KEYSER, W.Va. — William Francis “Bill” Davis, 88, of Route 4, Keyser, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Dawn View Center, Fort Ashby, W.Va.

Born Oct. 8, 1924 in Keyser, he was a son of the late Dwight William and Doris (Meeker) Davis. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Martha (Wagoner) Davis on March 17, 2007; a daughter, Marianne D. Baker; two brothers, Patrick Joseph Davis and Forrest A. Davis; and three sisters, Anna Mae Davis, Janice Ann Bosley and Betty Lee Scott.

Mr. Davis was a 1942 graduate of Keyser High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Force, serving until February, 1946 as a radio technician with the 45th Troop Carrier Squadron. He then returned to school at Potomac State College, graduated in 1948, and attended the University of Maryland. He worked at West Virginia State Road Commission, Allegany Ballistics Laboratory and West Virginia Power State of Mount Storm, where he retired as a Coal Yard Supervisor.

In his later years, he spoke of his plane’s engine failure, causing it to crash into the Sea of Japan. On his first visit to the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, he was shocked to see a plane just like the one that rescued the crew days later.

Bill was a member of Church of the Assumption and Knights of Columbus Council 10545, Keyser. He was known to many as a devoted husband, father, and brother; a good neighbor; a man of deep faith; and a lover of basset hounds. He was an avid reader who inspired his daughters’ educational pursuits and taught them that they could do anything they set out to do.  Above all, his sense of humor kept his family laughing in the most difficult of times.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathryn A. Davis of Alexandria, Va.; his sister, Mary Louise McKenzie and husband Bernard Earl McKenzie of Sandy, Utah; his sisters-in-law, Donna Wagoner of Keyser and Mary Lou Davis of Massillon, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Assumption, 34 James St., Keyser, on Monday, July 15, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Ivan M. Lebar, T.O.R as celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Inurnment will follow in Saint Thomas Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (www.StJude.org) or to BROOD (Basset Hound Rescue of the Old Dominion at 3445 Seminole Trail, Box 248, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser.

Condolences may be left for the family after Mr. Davis’ obituary at www.markwoodfuneralhome.com.
