NED A. MARTIN [Petersburg, Pa.]

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Ned Augustus Martin, 81, 33 N. Grove St., of Petersburg, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 25, 2013, at Grant Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Williamsport and was a son of the late Gussie Benjamin Martin and Lucy (Poffenberger) Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three infant brothers.

Mr. Martin graduated from Williamsport High School in 1949. In high school, he played soccer, basketball and baseball.  He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was a veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from Potomac State College and West Virginia University with a Bachelors and Master Degree in Agricultural Education.

He taught at Howard County High School for two years and was a county agent in Howard County. In 1965, he and his family moved to Petersburg, W.Va., where he was a Vocational Agricultural Teacher and FFA Advisor at Petersburg High School for 23 years. After his retirement in 1988, he was a real estate salesman for Century 21 Mountain Heritage Realty in Petersburg for several years.    

He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He was a life member of Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 and American Legion Post 78.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Walters) Martin; three sons, Tom Martin and wife Debbie, of Winchester, Va., Ben Martin, of Petersburg, W.Va. and Bill Martin, of Ranson, W.Va.; one grandson, Gus Martin, of Winchester, Va.; three sisters, Trixie Bloyer, of Williamsport, Betty Hessler, of Boonsboro and Nancy Bowman, of Williamsport, along with several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl VanStavern and Robert Mullet, Mennonite speaker.

Interment will be in the Lahmansville Cemetery with military rites by the VFW Post 6454.
