JOHN L. BECHTOL [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND — John L. Bechtol, 92, of Cumberland, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his home.

Born Aug. 7, 1920, in Orleans Cross Roads, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward F. Sr. and Minnie P. (Hardy) Bechtol. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward F. Bechtol Jr. and Wilbur L. Bechtol and one brother and one sister who died in infancy. He was the last surviving member of his family.

Mr. Bechtol retired after 40 years of service with B&O Railroad. He was a graduate of Paw Paw High School, class of 1938 and an Army veteran of World War II serving in the continental United States and in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in New Zealand, Australia, New Guinea and Luzon Island of the Philippines with the 237th Station hospital with Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., as commanding officer.

He was a former secretary of Paw Paw, W.Va. and Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Departments, former vice president and president of the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks and was a charter member and former Elder of the Winifred Road Church of Christ, Cumberland. John was also a member of the Post 13 American Legion, Cumberland and National Rifle Association.

Surviving are his wife, Faun V. Bechtol; two daughters, Marilyn S. Harris and husband Neil, of Clayton, N.C. and Carolyn L. Strunk and husband Will, of Grover, Pa.; two grandsons, Jared Strunk, of Grover, and Jason Strunk, of Silver Spring; two granddaughters, Lori Whatley, of Clayton, N.C. and Lisa Villella and husband Todd, of Angier, N.C; two great-grandsons, Elliot Villella and Connor Villella and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Monday, April 1, 2013, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Ministers Leo Lavin and Will Strunk officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to John’s caregivers. In addition, they are grateful to the staff of the Western Maryland Health System and Home Hospice that were responsible for giving John special care in his last days on Earth. Faun, Marilyn and Carolyn also would like to express their gratitude to Leo and Ramona Lavin for their friendship and help over the last 30 years.
