BETTY R. HAYES [Keyser, W.Va.]

KEYSER, W.Va. — Betty Ruth (Smith) Hayes, 82, formerly a resident of Heartland of Keyser, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Potomac Valley Hospital, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 24, 1931, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the youngest of six children born to the late Clay and Lola I. (Swick) Smith. After the untimely death of her mother, she resided with her uncle and aunt, Charles and Mae Reeves and their three children.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. “Sam” Hayes; three sisters, Maxine Lauria, Mae Langley and Thelma Gornall; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Smith and Madelene Jones and five brothers-in-law, Jack Haske, Dick Gornall, Erman Hayes, Vernon Gaines  and Robert Jones. Of her extended family, she was preceded in death by her uncle and aunt Charles and Mae Reeves and brothers-in-law, Lee Kesner and Gene Kesner.

In 1949, Betty married Er-nest H. “Sam” Hayes. Together they owned and operated “Sam’s Texaco” and later owned and operated the Valley Farm on Route 46, Keyser.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan F. Whetzel and her husband, Melvin “Boog” Whetzel, of Keyser; a grandson, Joseph H. Whetzel, wife Tracy, and their children, Savannah and Logan, of Cumberland; a granddaughter, Jennifer M. Smith and her children, Haley, Linsey and Andy, of Keyser; one brother, Charles W. Smith, of Keyser; one sister, Helen Haske, of Falls Church, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Hayes and Betty Gains, of Fort Ashby and two brothers-in-law, Mickey Langley, of Mechanicsville and Donald Hayes and wife Sally, of Patterson Creek.

Of her extended family, she is survived by Ruth Kesner, Shirley Kesner and Charles Reeves and wife Wilda, all of Keyser, along with many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

Entombment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens.
